Yellowstone Recap: As Jamie Backs Down From a Familiar Fight, Dan Gets Fired Up for a Whole New One

The second of Sunday’s two Yellowstone episodes (read our recap of the first here) was titled “The Reek of Desperation.” But it might as well have been called “Everybody Hates Jamie.” Why?

For starters, Lynelle revealed to her candidate for AG that John had given Cassidy his announcement speech to use as her own. In other words, he’d lost not only his financial backing but also his platform. The governor had an idea that might save his campaign, however: Rainwater’s money. Torn about teaming up with his father’s nemesis, a desperate Jamie turned to Beth, who, when not hurling insults, warned that the likes of the Machiavellian chief would rip him to shreds and John with him.

In the end, Jamie decided against availing himself of Rainwater’s resources. “To beat [Cassidy],” the would-be politician observed to Christina, “I have to attack [John].” And that, he would not do. Disgusted, Christina predicted that he’d be back working for Daddy in no time. “Your sister was right,” she added as she kicked Jamie out of her apartment and her life. “What a chicken-heart.” (See above for Beth’s priceless reaction to the news that Jamie had pulled out of the race.)

‘IT’S THE WRANGLERS THAT HAVE ALL THE FUN’ | In other developments, Kayce and Monica continued to struggle with their separation — although she did seem a mite distracted by the handsome physical therapist that she repelled with her wedding band. John embarked on a plan to make Kayce Livestock Commissioner in 15 years or so. And, although Beth loathed seeing Rip reduced to grunt work, he had Kayce’s back in all matters pertaining to the ranch and its hands.

No sooner had Dan and Rainwater inked their deal than the developer was paid a visit by the menacing Beck brothers. They quickly pointed out all the holes in Dan’s agreement, then “suggested” that as swiftly as possible, he extricate himself from that pact and go into business with them. On a shopping run for the Yellowstone, Jimmy ran afoul of some former meth-head buddies and wound up having his ass saved by Avery (with whom he’d have made the cutest couple, no?).

Finally, when not arguing over the crossed purposes at which they’d found themselves, John and Lynelle hooked up again. Well, almost. Flooded with memories of her late husband, she hit the brakes, and she and John both admitted that they were as likely to fall in love again as cattle is to fly. By the end of the hour, John’s rare attempt to bond with his children left him misty-eyed and cursing Evelyn for leaving him.
