Due to Kevin Costner’s leave, Yellowstone will end with Season 5. But now that we got a glimpse at Taylor Sheridan’s original plan for Season 6, we’re quite intrigued.
Summary:
- After Kevin Costner’s sudden exit from Yellowstone, the show will end prematurely with Season 5.
- Taylor Sheridan already had plans for Season 6 which was to introduce Cory Asbury as Kayce Dutton’s brother.
- Despite the Season 6 cancelation, Asbury could still join the franchise in a spin-off or a prequel show.
It was never Taylor Sheridan’s intention to end his hit show Yellowstone as early as Season 5, but the lead star’s scandalous exit from the series left him no choice. There is no Yellowstone without Kevin Costner — but before the actor’s feud with Sheridan, the creator of the show had long-going plans for its development.
Here’s what we learned about the original Yellowstone Season 6 plans.
Why Will There Be No Yellowstone Season 6?
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone has always been among Paramount Network’s most popular and beloved drama shows. Thanks to the creator’s unique approach, Yellowstone has a massive cult following which, among other things, allowed Sheridan to launch a handful of prequel shows and spin-offs. Everything was great.
But at the beginning of 2023, the public learned about a serious internal conflict between Sheridan and Yellowstone’s lead star Kevin Costner. The feud started with the schedule problems and ended up bringing Yellowstone to its closure after Costner announced his departure from the series. Season 5 will be the show’s final one.
What Did We Learn About Original Season 6 Plans?
Admittedly, we won’t ever learn the entire truth about the planned Season 6 because the previous (and currently ongoing) S5 had to be dramatically changed to bring Yellowstone to an unexpected closure. However, the recent Instagram Q&A session with Cory Asbury, the American Christian rock star, revealed some curious details.
Apparently, Asbury was supposed to play a new Dutton family member in Season 6, adding to the already vast family. Fans of the musician have long pointed out his almost uncanny resemblance with Kayce Dutton from Yellowstone, and it seems like Taylor Sheridan also noticed that fact. Here’s what Cory Asbury said about this.
“I was supposed to be Kayce’s long-lost brother. I was fired up about it and so bummed when it was canceled,” the musician shared during the Q&A session.
This only proves that Yellowstone was thriving before Kevin Costner’s unexpected exit, and Taylor Sheridan was planning on expanding both his universe and the Dutton clan even further in the seasons to come. Now, his plans are majorly altered — but there are still options for Cory Asbury’s character to make an appearance.
How Can Asbury Still Join the Yellowstone-verse?
The most obvious choice for entering Cory Asbury’s new character into his universe would be by making him appear in one of the two planned spin-offs — either 6666 or 2024. While Yellowstone Season 5 will tie up most loose ends, these new shows could keep several major characters, including Kayce — and his long-lost brother.
But according to the musician, “it was canceled.” This phrase could have referred to Yellowstone in general, but most likely, he spoke about his own appearance in it since it was planned for Season 6. If Sheridan chooses to not implement Asbury’s character in the future spin-off, there’s always another option: the prequels.
Yellowstone’s prequels tell the story of the Dutton family through the decades prior to the original show’s timeline. Thanks to his resemblance to Kayce, Cory Asbury could portray one of the Duttons from the previous generations which would both be a nice Easter egg, a wise use of this opportunity, and one rock star’s dream come true.
