A new report reveals that a major sticking point in Kevin Costner’s potential Yellowstone season 5 return involved Taylor Sheridan’s scripts.
- Conflict arises over scripts for Yellowstone season 5, as star Kevin Costner and creator Taylor Sheridan cl ash over demands and creative control.
- Costner seeks higher pay, less shooting time, and script approval for future episodes, but Sheridan, the sole writer, refuses to agree to these terms.
- Season 5 part 2 continues to be delayed as writers and actors strike for fair pay, but no positive progress has been made toward resolving the tension between Costner and Sheridan so far.
A new report on the Yellowstone backstage drama details a conflict over the scripts for season 5. The Paramount Network show, which was co-created by Taylor Sheridan and premiered in 2018, stars Kevin Costner as John Dutton III, the patriarch of a large family who fights to maintain their ownership of the family ranch. Although the show is supported by a massive ensemble that includes Wes Bentley and Luke Grimes, it was revealed that the upcoming second half of season 5 will conclude the run of the series following the announcement that Costner was exiting the series.
A new report from Puck reveals that Costner and Sheridan sat down in July for talks about the star potentially returning for Yellowstone season 5 part 2 and beyond. However, Sheridan – who writes all the scripts for the show on his own – refused to agree to Costner’s terms, which included higher pay, less time shooting, and the ability to approve or veto the scripts for upcoming episodes. There is still time to resolve this tension amid strike delays as writers and actors continue to fight for fair pay, but there has reportedly not been any positive progress on that front.
What’s Going to Happen to Yellowstone?
The impending end of the neo-Western show is essentially tied to Costner’s decision. If he does agree to return to the Yellowstone cast, the show could potentially continue through seasons 6 and 7, though Sheridan would have to rewrite the mostly-finished season 5 part 2 scripts, which were written under the presumption that Costner would not be returning. As Costner and Sheridan continue to butt heads, however, it seems less and less likely that the Yellowstone flagship show will have a future.
It remains to be seen how Yellowstone will write out John Dutton, should that be the case. Considering how closely involved the character is in the lives of his family, the easiest way to do so would be to have the character die. However, the options as to how to write a death for the character are limited by a clause in Costner’s contract that requires the character to die in a “moral” way, with certain specific manners of death strictly off limits.
Whether or not Costner returns and Yellowstone stays on the air, the franchise as a whole should keep going strong for several years to come. There is already a season 2 of the prequel show 1923 on the way, as well as a sequel series that is set to star Matthew McConaughey. Said series could also provide an avenue for any non-Costner cast members to return, should they wish to do so.
