Why Kevin Costner is leaving Yellowstone – and how much he got paid to play John Dutton

Hit Western drama Yellowstone still needs to wrap up its fifth and final season before a new era for the Dutton family begins.

Kevin Costner is in the midst of a messy divorce and a wildly ambitious film project which is currently preventing him from finishing the final episodes of Yellowstone.

The Hollywood A-lister has starred as powerful ranch owner John Dutton for the past five years until the series was put on hold earlier this year.

His divorce trouble, the ongoing writers’ strike and an alleged feud with showrunner Taylor Sheridan could delay the release of season five, part two for another year.

Costner’s split from his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner could reportedly cost the star $200 million, but was his Yellowstone salary enough to foot the bill?

The Bodyguard star began on a salary of $500,000 per episode back when the first season started.

After Yellowstone’s massive success in recent years, he’s now allegedly paid $1.2 million an episode.

According to Radar Online, he wanted that raised to $1.5 million if he returned for another season.

It’s unclear if this will be Costner’s rate for the second half of season five, or if this was scrapped along with plans for Yellowstone’s sixth season.

However, if reports were correct, he’s already made $9.6 million for the first half of season five alone – still not enough to cover the divorce.

Thankfully, this isn’t the Hollywood legend’s only source of income.

He’s currently renting out his 160-acre Dunbar Ranch estate in Aspen, described as the “ultimate luxury retreat”.

Holiday-makers are charged $36,000 a night for the privilege of staying in Costner’s vacation home, which boasts 12 bedrooms, a baseball field and 24/7 service.

Although he’s apparently one of the highest-paid actors in scripted TV, Costner still has the staggering cost of his upcoming Western film Horizon to consider.

The project is rumored to have put a strain on his marriage to Baumgartner as he has devoted the majority of his spare time to its production.

He even mortgaged a 10-acre waterfront property in California to contribute towards the film’s $100 million budget.

Hopefully, the Field of Dreams star eventually makes it back on set to finish this chapter of the Dutton saga, which ended with several loose threads at the start of the year.

The star is also planning on splitting his own Western picture into a mammoth four parts, though, so he may have other priorities by the time the ranch is up and running again.

Yellowstone is available on Paramount+.
