Yellowstone season 4 ended with Beth Dutton getting revenge on the people who tried to kill her and her family. As a result, her adopted brother Jamie was finally under control. During a recent interview, Kelly Reilly shared how she feels about her icy character and the long-running feud she’s had with Jamie (Wes Bentley). She also revealed her hopes for Beth and Jamie’s “toxic” relationship going into season 5.
The reason for Beth and Jamie’s feud was revealed in ‘Yellowstone’ season 3
During a season 3 flashback, Yellowstone fans found out why Beth and Jamie’s relationship took a horrible turn when they were teenagers. It was revealed that she turned to her brother to help her get an abortion after Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) got her pregnant. But things didn’t go as planned.
When the two young teens arrived at the clinic on the Broken Rock Reservation, it was made clear to Jamie that they required sterilization after terminating the pregnancy. Jamie agreed to the hysterectomy without Beth’s knowledge and consent. It wasn’t until later that she found out that she couldn’t have children.
Beth has been out for revenge ever since
Beth’s hatred for her brother has been growing ever since that crucial moment years ago. By the time Jamie betrayed the Duttons — and Beth discovered he knew that his biological father Garrett Randall (Will Patton) was the one behind the hit on the family — she was determined to get revenge.
Instead of killing her brother, Beth blackmailed Jamie after making him kill Garrett. She took a photo of Jamie dropping Garrett off at the train station. And now, she and John (Kevin Costner) “own” him.
‘Yellowstone’ star Kelly Reilly reveals her hopes for Beth and Jamie’s ‘toxic’ relationship
Reilly recently told Entertainment Tonight that there are times that Beth has taken her dispute with Jamie too far. She confessed that she feels “really bad for Jamie, sometimes.” Even though the treatment he gets is often deserved.
“I think the relationship between Jamie and Beth is so toxic, it’s so full of betrayal and so full of pain for her. But I think the reason why all of that exists is because she loves him,” Reilly said.
When it comes to the future of Beth and Jamie’s relationship, Reilly wasn’t sure if it could be fixed.
“I don’t know,” Reilly admitted. “What I hope is she will find some peace. And I don’t think you can find peace if you hold that much pain.”
The scenes between Beth and Jamie are difficult for Kelly Reilly
Reilly acknowledged that the majority of the scenes she’s had with Bentley during the first four seasons of Yellowstone have been difficult. Some of those sequences get physical, and Beth is either threatening to kill her brother or telling him to commit suicide.
“A lot of those scenes are really difficult to play because they’re so filled with pain,” Reilly explained. “So they’re pretty brutal to drop into. It’s hard to talk about it, honestly. When I’m playing her, I’m full-in. And then it’s sort of like coming out, then I watch it and I don’t even remember doing some of the scenes.”
Kelly Reilly says Beth was ‘on a warpath with everybody’ during ‘Yellowstone’ season 4
Reilly says that Beth is the “most challenging” role she’s ever played. She’s also “thrilling” because there are so many different aspects to her.
“There’s two parts of Beth. There’s the one that, you know, ‘the sting never fades Beth.’ And, then there’s the one who is trying to protect her father and the ranch, and wants to find peace and is in love with a man. There’s like two warring parts this season, vying for her attention. And it feels like it was sort of on steroids this season,” Reilly noted.
“The need for revenge that she carries in her. I mean, it’s pretty dark. It’s very dark. I feel like Beth this season was on the warpath with everybody.”
