The actors discussed the show’s cliffhanger ending, and whether Spencer and Alex are the ancestors of Yellowstone’s John Dutton.

The first season of the latest Yellowstone prequel, 1923, may have come to an end, but there are still plenty of lingering questions about the newest installment of the Dutton family history. Though the series only wrapped up its first season on Sunday, plenty of fans are already eagerly awaiting the show’s next outing—and they’re not the only ones hoping for answers about season 2. Actors Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer, who play Spencer and Alexandra Dutton on the series, both spoke with THR about the cliffhanger ending for their star-crossed characters, and addressed some of their own lingering questions for next season, including the quandary on everyone’s mind: Who are the ancestors of Yellowstone‘s John Dutton?

Spoilers ahead!

All season long, fans have debated which of the 1923 characters will turn out to be the parents of John Dutton II, the future father of Yellowstone‘s patriarch, with Spencer and Alex being primary contenders along with Spencer’s nephew Jack and his wife Elizabeth. While Elizabeth’s pregnancy seemed to make them the more likely choice in recent episodes, the finale saw her sadly suffer a miscarriage, while Alex displayed symptoms of what could either be seasickness or morning sickness, once again opening the subject for debate. So what do the actual stars think?

“Honestly, I have not been told a single thing, but I have my theories,” Schlaepfer told the publication. “When I was filming those scenes, there were definitely some moments where I was choosing to believe that maybe it was more than motion sickness. But there has been no confirmation from [show creator Taylor Sheridan] at all, so it could have just been those waves.” She also said, “Of course, I would love to be a part of the Dutton line and involved in that. It’s such a special honor. … As we were filming, we were trying to sprinkle in moments where you might see a little bit of Beth in there. You also see other similarities happening in the characters. So I would love to be the great-grandmother of all those characters, but we’ll see what happens.”

“I honestly do not know,” said Sklenar. “It’s something that we’ve all wanted to know the answer to, but I don’t think we’re going to know until everyone gets that episode, whenever Taylor writes it and puts it down. But it’s something that he’s keeping very close to the vest, and genuinely no one knows.” He added, “From day one, we’ve all said, ‘No, it’s this person! No, it’s me. It’s Jack.’ But I don’t know. It could go either way.”

And while the actors admit that they don’t know what’s ahead for their characters in season two, it does promise the potential for some major drama as Spencer and Alex try to find each other again after being forcibly separated when Spencer kills Alex’s former fiancée in a duel.

“I think the first time we see her real fear of [Spencer’s] demons is in the finale, when she sees him kill not just an animal, but a person,” said Schlaepfer. “She saw the animalistic instinct to kill come out of him, and it’s shocking for her. We definitely wanted to sprinkle in moments of fear and confusion. ‘What did I just witness? This person is capable of killing humans.’ So I think we might grapple with that a bit in season two.”

Sklenar echoed the sentiment, saying, “All I know about part two is that I’m certain there’s going to be a shift in the tone, just for Spencer and the show itself. The stakes all around have been raised to a new level, and the pain and the guilt that he’s carrying into this next part is going to shape him into a version of himself that we haven’t seen yet. If I can speculate as the character, I could see it going there. And then, hopefully, he carries that home and is able to realize his purpose in terms of fighting for his family and saving the ranch.”

No announcement has been made so far as to when fans can expect another installment of 1923, but all of the episodes of the first season are now available to stream on Paramount+.
