How did I not remember this?
For those who may not know, or can’t quite remember, before Luke Grimes’ career as Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone, he also played a role in hit movie, American Sniper, starring Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller.
Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film also stars Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes as Marc Lee, Chris Kyle’s Navy SEAL buddy who loses his life in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
I’ll be the first to say that I always knew I had seen Grimes play on something I’d watched in the past, but couldn’t quite put my finger on it, until this clip resurfaced on YouTube and it finally hit me.
Although near completely different roles (except for the fact they were both Navy SEALs), Grimes could not have fathomed what that part would lead to in the future.
Believe it or not, that roll on American Sniper is what landed him on Yellowstone.
He said in an interview with ET:
“John Linson and Taylor Sheridan, our show creators, went to see it (American Sniper) in the movie theater.
Taylor was writing Yellowstone, and John called me and said, ‘Bro we loved Sniper, Taylor’s writing a part for this young Navy SEAL cowboy guy.’
That was like two years before I got the script, and I talked to Taylor for the first time on the phone right after he saw American Sniper and he said, ‘I think you’d be great for this Kayce character.’”
Needless to say, his career has catapulted by a ton since the beginning of the show.
Speaking of Grimes’ career catapulting, we learned the news that he’s gotta country music career
He spoke a bit more about it in this interview, talking about how great it’s been having the opportunity to play such a big role on one of the most popular TV series to ever exist:
“I’m happy with my life, you know, I wake up every day and feel so lucky… I get to live where I live and be married to my wife. So yeah, sure, I’m proud of myself.”
When you’re a little boy and you want to be an actor, what are some things you want to play? A cowboy, a soldier, It’s kind of all of the dream roles wrapped into one. He’s just an emotionally complex guy but also a badass. It’s all good stuff.”
He also said that he would be joining his buddy Ryan Bingham when he kickstarts his country music career.
He even jokingly added that he will fully be singing as Luke, not Kayce:
“I think it would be weird if Kayce stared singing… But here pretty soon, you’ll see Luke singing.”
Luke was also in the remake of The Magnificent Seven starring Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt, and more.
