YELLOWSTONE season 4 is over but what is the real reason behind Will Patton leaving as Garrett Randall?
Yellowstone fans had been waiting longer than expected for the fourth season to start on Paramount Network. But when it did premiere last year, the Western drama continued to cause a stir with shocking plot twists left, right and centre, including the exit of Garrett Randall (played by Will Patton). Here’s everything we know about actor Will Patton’s exit from Yellowstone.
Will Patton was welcomed to the cast of Yellowstone in season three last year.
He was introduced as the biological father of Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) who recently discovered that he was adopted and went searching for his birth parents.
Jamie found out his mum Phylis was beaten to death by his dad Garrett who was subsequently sentenced for murder, thus why he ended up being adopted by John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his now-deceased wife Evelyn (Gretchen Mol).
But from the very beginning, his appearance spelt bad news for the Duttons.
He had been trying to turn Jamie against John, Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) as soon as he was back on the scene.
Jamie later found out that it was actually his dad who was behind the dramatic assassination attempts on all three of them at the end of the third season.
He was determined to keep this a secret from his family so Jamie chose to say nothing.
But unfortunately for him, Beth found out the truth and she wanted answers.
Why did Will Patton really leave Yellowstone as Garrett Randall?
Beth confronted her adopted brother in his office about the attacks and he begged her not to say a word.
She gave him just three options: Jamie and Garrett would both be arrested, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) would be told the truth and go after both of them, or Jamie would have to kill Garrett.
So in an emotional scene, Garrett tells his son that he isn’t a “bad man” and that he loves him.
This is right before Jamie gets out a gun behind his dad’s back and pulls the trigger, killing Garrett instantly.
Actor Patton hasn’t spoken out about his exit from Yellowstone as Garrett Randall.
This potentially means there wasn’t a reason for his departure besides that it was a part of the arc storyline in the fourth season.
Patton was most likely brought into the cast as a temporary character rather than for the long haul.
This meant the creators could have the dramatic assassination storyline as well as delve into Jamie’s past without it having an ongoing impact on the show.
Since leaving Yellowstone, Patton has been working on other projects.
He will feature in the upcoming 1920s drama You Can’t Win as Foot and A Half George.
Patton is also going to be in the upcoming Western mystery drama Outer Range which is currently in post-production.
