Tom Selleck Ditched Hollywood for Ranch Life with His Family: Here’s Why

If you are anything like us, or apparently Tom Selleck as well, you maybe felt like you never belonged in a city. We are Outsiders after all. And nothing speaks to the spirit like time outdoors with family.

Actor Tom Selleck, famous for his role as Richard on Friends, or Thomas Magnum on Magnum, P.I., reveals that despite being an acting and mustache icon, he is first a family man.

In an interview with People, Selleck reveals why he left the Hollywood scene and traded it for a private Ventura ranch.

“I’m a fairly private person,” Tom Selleck says. “And I’ve always treasured the balance between work and time with my family. It’s always about them.”

Selleck tries his best to balance his two lives between father and famous actor. When he isn’t in New York filming the hit crime show Blue Bloods, he is on the other side of the country with his family.

Tom Selleck’s Relationships

Tom Selleck was married to Jacqueline Ray from 1971 until the two called it quits and got a divorce in 1982. Together, Ray and Selleck had one child, Kevin Selleck.

In 1987, Tom Selleck married Jillie Mack, and the two had one child, Hannah Margaret Selleck. Selleck and Mack have been blissfully married for over 30 years.

Selleck credits his family and patch of heaven for his level-headedness.

“My relationships and my ranch keep me sane,” says the 76-year-old actor. “I do grunt work, and I make the rounds. I like watching things grow. It’s a retreat.”

‘I Don’t Think I’m Cut Out For This’

Tom Selleck bought the ranch a year after him, and Mack tied the knot. Around the same time, he quit Magnum P.I. after deciding that the spotlight wasn’t for him due to his private nature.

“I knew intellectually what it would mean in terms of being a public person, but until you’ve lived it, there’s no way to understand it,” Selleck stated. “I had a feeling of, ‘I don’t think I’m cut out for this.’”

The actor says he was tired from the show physically and mentally.

The reason was “not because I didn’t like it or I was tired of it. I was tired from it. And I wanted a three-dimensional life because I didn’t have one.”

After a longer than anticipated break, Tom Selleck returned to the big screen in the 90s for small parts on Friends and The Closer. Prior to that, none of the characters he was offered peaked his interest he said.

He finally took the part of Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods. A role that many of his fans now feel defines his career. However, he says that it was the balance of filming and his family that he is really thankful for.

“I’m proud of my work, I still love what I do, and I have my family,” says Tom. “I’ve been enormously fortunate.”
